National Human Rights commission

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is an independent institution established under the Protection of Human Rights Act 1998. Its primary objectives are to promote and protect human rights.

A free inclusive Mauritian society where all citizens respect each other’s rights and dignity and live together in harmony.

About Us

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) adheres to the Paris Principles and enjoys ‘A’ status accreditation from the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).

The NHRC is a member of the following organisations :

  • The Global Alliance of  National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) based in Geneva.
  • The regional Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) based in Nairobi.
  • The Association Francophone des Commissions Nationales des Droits de L’Homme (AFCNDH) based in Paris.
  • The Commonwealth Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (CFNHRI).

Policy statement on Pluralism

The National Human Rights Commission affirms its full commitment to pluralism as a fundamental principle of its independence and effectiveness, in line with the Paris Principles. The Commission welcomes applications from qualified individuals across all segments of Mauritian society, including civil society, academia, women, persons with disabilities, minorities, and persons of any sexual orientation, as well as individuals from varied professional and socio-economic backgrounds, and seeks to ensure that its composition reflects the diversity of the population it serves. Appointments are made through a transparent and merit-based process, with due regard to balanced representation, including gender, ethnicity, socio-economic background, and expertise. The Commission is committed to equal opportunity and ensures that no candidate is advantaged or disadvantaged on the basis of political affiliation, religious belief, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, or any other status.
