​​The ​National Hum​an Rights Commis​sion (NHRC) is a quasi-judicial body established under the Protection of Human Rights Act 1998. Its primary objectives are to promote and protect human rights.
 ​​
​T​h​​e NHRC operates in accordance with the Paris Principles and has achieve​​d 'A' status accreditation from the Global Alliance ​of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), established under the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva.

​The NHRC​​ holds membership with the following organisations:
•The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) based in Geneva.
​​​
•The regional Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) based in Nairobi.

​•The Association Francophone des Commissions Nationales des Droits de L’Homme (AFCNDH) based in Paris.

•The Commonwealth Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (CFNHRI).​

Milestones of the National Human Rights Commission

​2001
​The National Human Rights​ Commission was established and became operational following the adoption of the Protection of Human Rights Act 1998.
​2003
​A Sex Discrimination Division was established within the NHRC to investigate complaints of sex discrimination and​​ sexual harassment after the enactment of The Sex Discrimination Act 2002. However, it is no longer operational at the NHRC following the enactment of the Equal Opportunities Act 2008.
​2012
​Significant structural changes have been implemented within the NHRC, resulting in the establishment of three divisions: the Human Rights Division, the Police Complaints Division, and the National Preventive Mechanism Division.
​As fr​om 2018
​The National Human Rights Commission is currently operational with two divisions: the Human Rights D​ivision and the National Preventive Mechanism Division. The Police Complaint Division is no longer operational at the NHRC, as the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) was established in 2018.​​
